Rolling Stone: The Black Keys Unleash a Blues Riot at Coachella
The Black Keys returned to Coachella with a neighborly hello and operated essentially as they have many times before at the festival, having worked their way up from an obscure Akron, Ohio duo on the smallest stages to a headliner in 2012. The production was bigger, with colorful graphics flashing on the huge screens around them, but the music remained rooted in the band’s commitment to jagged rock and blues. « Let’s get moving, » said singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach, wearing a studded black motorcycle jacket and drilling right into the tortured echo and stutter of « Howlin’ for You, » fleshed out with extra players on bass and heaving organ. But the core duo of Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney frequently stripped things back down to just the two of them, ready to bash through the rawest, hungriest riffs and beats of « Your Touch » and other tributes to swampy blues.
Following the Keys’ set, a swat team of roadies overhauled the main stage to make way for DJ trio Swedish House Mafia, the EDM supergroup consisting of Axwell, Steve Agnello and Sebastian Ingrosso. It wasn’t just the stage setup that changed – pyrotechnics and elaborate, outsized visuals ruled the set – but the entire vibe. Out went the Keys blues riot and in came the blistering beats, courtesy of the group’s synth-driven smashes like « In My Mind » and « Save The World. » Their panoramic visual display, the product of our pristine LCD screens stacked four stories high, was the undoubted highlight.

Depuis Le Moulin à images de Robert Lepage qui a fait fureur lors des célébrations de 400e anniversaire de la ville de Québec, un grand nombre de façades d’immeubles se transforment en écran de projection. De plus en plus de jeunes compagnies québécoises, spécialistes de l’éclairage de scènes, se lancent dans l’aventure de la vidéoprojection sur ces écrans urbains. Daniel Carrière et Pier Gagné suivent l’une de ces compagnies et lèvent le voile sur ces sculpteurs de lumière. Ce reportage n’est pas disponible sur Internet.

MONTREAL – A lot, it seems, can happen in eight months.
The Black Keys were at the Bell Centre only last July, delighting 8,300 members of their growing fan base. In the time it takes most bands to get the right drum sound for an album track, they were back in the same venue Tuesday night – this time before 12,600 far louder, way more animated and – from at least one vantage point – considerably more beer-fuelled fans. The kind that figured the dramatic pause in 10 Cent Pistol really needed to be filled by howls.

Précédés des Arctic Monkeys qui ont pris du gallon depuis qu’ils furent découverts sur l’internet au milieu de la précédente décennie, Dan Auerbach et Patrick Carney se sont déchaînés d’aplomb avec leurs fans montréalais.

Le concert en plein air de Stefie Shock avait été précédé d’une projection vidéo sur le mur de la Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan.
Intitulée À propos de Stern, cette création fantaisiste de l’entreprise montréalaise Geodezik utilise l’architecture ambiante pour raconter une histoire en images. Dans ce court métrage déjanté, les personnages tombent des fenêtres, grimpent le long des murs ou aboutissent au beau milieu d’un jeu vidéo.

Pendant toute la durée du MEL, des projections du spectacle multimédia À propos de Stern auront lieu quotidiennement, à 18h30 et 19h15. Reflétée sur le mur est de la Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, l’œuvre est une réalisation de la compagnie montréalaise Geodezik, qui se spécialise dans les services de design multimédia en création de contenu et en scénographie vidéo. Ses fondateurs, Olivier Goulet et Gabriel Coutu-Dumont, ont dans le passé collaboré avec de grands noms comme The Black Keys, Katy Perry, Usher, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, Cher, Whitney Houston et le Cirque du Soleil.
